Happy Easter

Two items from the Library have been posted home in the end of term mailing to Year 7 & Year 8 parents. The first is Reading Suggestions, my termly list of reading ideas and book news (look for the golden paper). Also in the mailing is a letter about Shadowing the Carnegie Medal, an exciting reading initiative which I run in the summer term. A group of us at OLCSS will be ‘shadowing’ the prestigious Carnegie Medal, along with many other school reading groups around the country.

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) awards the Carnegie Medal annually for an outstanding fiction book written the previous year for young people. A shortlist will be announced on 20 April, and I hope that the shadowing group, with students from Years 7-8, will read as many of the titles as they can, between then and 22 June, when the winner will be announced. There will be copies of the books available in school, although many shadowers in previous years have liked to buy some of the books.

You can find out all about the shadowing scheme at the CILIP Carnegie website, where the 70th Anniversary of the Carnegie Medal is being celebrated. There is a Living Archive featuring past winners, and also those of the Kate Greenaway Medal, which is awarded for an outstanding picture book. There is much to explore on this website. Adults too can join in the anniversary celebrations by nominating your favourite winning titles of all time. The Top 10 for both awards will also be announced on 20 April.

You can still still see the archive of our reviews from last year: click on ‘Shadowing Site’, at the top, then ‘Reading Groups’ to find OLCSS, or click here. It may even inspire you to read some of the titles or past winners.

If you want to see the list of nominations for the current shortlist, then click here.

Happy reading!

Library Software Upgrade

This coming week sees the Library’s management software being upgraded from ‘Alice’ to ‘Oliver’. Oliver will offer students and staff an extended range of services including checking their overdues, renewing their books, reserving items, receiving emails telling them automatically of new and relevant materials being added to the library catalogue, directly accessing electronic and web resources...

Oliver also comes with all the necessary administration facilities needed by the library manager: circulation, borrower file, cataloguing, stocktaking, archiving, and host of features that probably only excite professional librarians like myself! (Actually some of the features listed above were already happening with Alice). One facility I hope to use soon is a new ‘movie style’ tool which mimics the screen moves a user would make, and so show and annotate how something can be done on Oliver. Users can select the speed of replay that suits them and can pause, stop and start or select a specific point in the video to begin the video.

OLCSS Library joins an impressive list of educational establishments moving to the Oliver system, from primary to secondary schools and colleges.

Alice will be ‘frozen’ unchanged for 2 days (Wednesday and Thursday 21-22 March) but can still be used for Inquiry, and Oliver will be installed in the morning on Friday 23 March.

Book Fair: 7-12 March in the Library

There will be a great selection of books, as well as stationery and posters.

One of the books for sale will be Scholastic’s Book of the Month, Star Crossed by Rachael Winn, the 16-year-old girl from Didcot Girls’ School, who wrote the book when she was 14. She will be visiting OLCSS later this month to talk to Year 9s and Year 10s, and will also sign copies of her book. Copies can be ordered from the book fair, and will also be available at the time of her visit.

Also in the sale, Jacqueline Wilson's new book, her autobiography Jacky Daydream. Don't worry if it sells out, we can order extra copies for you.

There will be an opportunity to view all the books for sale at lunch time on Wednesday 7 March from 1.10 pm. You may also find your teacher has booked a viewing slot during that day. There will be no sales that day, but you can ask to have a book reserved for you.

Payment by cheque, please, payable to ‘Scholastic Ltd’ or cash. Books cannot be charged to your account, but you may use your £1 World Book Day voucher towards your purchase (only one voucher per book – you cannot use your friend’s towards the same book). You may reserve books, but they will not be kept for you if you have not paid by Monday. Orders for books sold out can also be taken with payment.
